Let's prepare for your in-home newborn session!

So excited for your upcoming session! This page has everything you need to feel prepped and ready- what to wear, what to expect, and answers to all the most common questions I get. I want you to feel confident, relaxed, and totally set before our session!

What to expect during your session

When I arrive, I’ll take a few minutes to look around and find the best light in your home- usually the living room, bedroom, or nursery. Don’t worry if things aren’t perfect- I’ll gently move anything that might be distracting in the background.

We’ll take our time and go at baby’s pace. The session usually lasts about 1–1.5 hours to allow for feeding breaks, diaper changes, and anything else baby needs. If your baby is fussy or wide awake, that’s totally fine! Some of the sweetest photos come from those in-between moments.

I’ll gently guide you through a mix of natural poses and candid moments- nothing stiff or overly styled. My goal is to make this feel relaxed, calm, and meaningful, without ever rushing.

Expect lots of snuggles, soft light, and sweet, real-life moments captured just as they are.

Timing

Sessions usually take place mid-morning and last about 1-1.5 hours. I build in plenty of time for feeding,

soothing, and breaks, so we can go at your baby's pace.

Lighting

We'll want to do the session when the light is brightest in your home. I use natural light and will move around

to find the best spots, usually in the living room, bedroom, or nursery. Open up the blinds or curtains ahead of

time to let in as much light as possible.

Outfits

Think about wearing colors that will look good displayed in your home and that go well with your home's color

palette. Neutrals and soft tones always photograph well. Try to avoid anything too bright, busy, or with big

logos. For baby, a plain onesie, swaddle, or simple outfit is perfect. I recommend having a few options ready.

House Prep

No need to deep clean. Just tidy up the rooms you think we'll use, and be sure to think about what might be in

the background of the photos. A made bed, cleared nightstands, and a clutter-free couch or floor can make a

big difference. I can always help move small things if needed.soothing, and breaks, so we can go at your baby's pace.

Baby Prep

If you can, try to feed baby right before I arrive or while I'm setting up. A full belly usually helps them settle

and get sleepy, but awake or fussy moments are totally normal and beautiful too.

Siblings & Pets

If you want to include siblings or pets, we'll usually start with them first and then let them take a break. Just let

me know ahead of time if they'll be part of the session.

FAQ

What if my baby cries the whole time?

Totally okay, and totally normal! The beauty of in-home sessions is that we’re not on a strict schedule. We can pause anytime you need to feed, settle, or snuggle. No rush, no pressure. I expect some tears- it’s all part of the newborn experience!

My house is not Pinterest perfect.. is that a problem?

Not at all. These sessions aren’t about having a spotless or styled home, they’re about capturing the real, beautiful moments of this season of life. Most homes aren’t “Pinterest perfect” (especially with a newborn), and that’s more than okay! I’m not there to document the mess, I’m there to capture your connection. If you can clear a little clutter from the spaces we’ll use, that’s all I need.

We don't have a nursery or much space

That’s completely fine. Some of the most meaningful sessions I’ve done have been in small spaces with minimal setup. A cozy corner, a couch, or a bed with good light is all we really need!

Do you bring any props?

Nope! I focus on real, meaningful moments. I’m all about capturing your family just as you are- no props needed. With that said, if YOU have props you want me to use (Moses basket, special items, etc) I am more than happy to incorporate those into the session!

We’re super awkward in front of the camera… help?!

I get it! I’ll gently guide you into natural poses and give you simple direction that keeps things relaxed. I promise you won’t feel stiff or overly posed—just connected and comfortable.

Can grandparents and other family members join in?

If they’re there and you'd like to include them, I’m happy to capture a few sweet moments with them! Just let me know ahead of time so I can plan accordingly. The focus will still be on your immediate family and baby, but I love preserving those generational connections too.

What if my baby has baby acne or flaky skin?

Totally normal and nothing to stress about. I lightly edit temporary things like baby acne, scratches, or redness- but I also leave the good stuff that makes your baby your baby. However, I do have the capability to edit out severe baby acne. If there’s something you’re concerned about, just let me know!

Can we change outfits during the session?

Yes, absolutely. I usually recommend 1–2 outfit options for baby, and if you want to swap outfits yourself or do a quick change for the whole family, that’s totally fine. Just keep everything nearby so it's easy to switch without too much disruption.

What happens if someone is sick?

Please let me know as soon as possible if anyone in your home isn’t feeling well. I totally understand that things happen, and we can reschedule if needed. I’ll always do the same on my end.
